Why is there a police presence at Northern Nevada Pride?
We recognize that LGBTQ+ communities have a long and complicated history with law enforcement, and we understand that the presence of police at Pride may feel different for different members of our community. We take those concerns seriously.
Northern Nevada Pride is held under a City of Reno special event permit. As part of that process, the City reviews public safety, crowd management, traffic, fire, and emergency-response needs and requires City services as a condition of the permit. For Northern Nevada Pride, the City requires Reno Police Department support onsite, and the event is responsible for the associated cost.
Since the launch of Northern Nevada Pride in 2014, we have worked closely with the Reno Police Department each year to ensure the support of our expression, the rights of our attendees, and above all, the safety of everyone.
Police are only one part of a broader safety plan, as front-facing security staff will be provided by a private, local security company who knows our community and event.
Each year we continue to build more community-centered support for the safety and wellbeing of our festival-goers, including our own trained safety and de-escalation volunteers, clearly marked quiet spaces, and community-led communication and safety management. By working together, we hope to maintain a safe, supportive, and joyful festival for everyone.
